Abstract

The growth, development and life history of Mycosphaerella rumicis (Desm.) Cooke, on its Rumex host and in culture, were investigated and described: inoculation experiments were carried out to follow the course of the infection of the host by the fungus. The structure of the ascus and ascospore of the fungus was investigated and described, and compared with other descriptions of bitunicate asci.Centrum development in Pleospora herbarum (Pers.) Rbh., Venturia inaequails (Cooke) Wint., Venturia pirina Aderh. and Mycospharella maculiformis (Pers.) Wint. was described and compared with that in Mycosphaerella rumicis. The classification of the ascostromatic ascomycetes was considered, and in the light of this, the taxonomic position of Mycosphaerella rumicis was discussed. It was concluded that the correct name of the fungus is Venturia rumicis (Desm) Wint.
