John Toland is identified as a major influence on the 'Traité des trois imposteurs' through his studies at Leiden University, his involvement in the circle of Eugène of Savoy and Baron d'Hohendorf, and his published views on Moses as an exemplary legislator without any supernatural element. Includes in appendices Toland's Projet (in the original French) and contemporary English translations of chapter 5 of the Traité.
